4. Spiritual health

One cannot be called ¡®healthy¡¯ unless all 4 of the conditions above are satisfied. I hope all of you satisfy those 4 conditions and enjoy a healthy life. Even if you meet the first three conditions, your life might end through committing suicide, drug abuse, or diseases when you come across extreme situations if you are not spiritually healthy. True wisdom tells us to check if we are healthy according to those 4 conditions above. Medical treatment provided by the hospital can improve physical, mental, and social health, yet you cannot receive any spiritual treatment from them.

I would like to discuss some ways to solve problems regarding spiritual health. The atheist existentialist philosopher, Nietzsche, said, ¡®God is dead.¡¯ Atheists deny the Almighty God and tried to overcome critical situations purely by human abilities. However they ended their own lives in anxiety and fear, without solving their situations. Some atheist existentialist philosophers, such as Kierkegaard, turn to the Almighty God in critical situations and overcome said situations. Hitler who slaughtered 6 million Jews was once a church choir member. Karl Marx was a Christian. Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus was one of the disciples. Kim Il Sung was a baptized Christian, yet he did not have true faith but only attended church services.

This is why some evangelists point out that many people inside the church need to be converted. We need to preach the Words of life so that people may find hope and walk with God throughout their life, overcome difficulties without giving up, and being happy. People commit suicide regardless of their level of wealth or education. Some pastors who studied theology simply took religious jobs without actually believing in Jesus. Some devoted people inside the church are nothing but well-trained religious practitioners without faith. Sometimes we witness these kind of people who lost the opportunity to repent and commit suicide.

Example) counseling of pastors, elders and Sunday school teachers

What kind of an attitude do we need to be a spiritually healthy person?

1. Communication between people / God.

When people communicate between other people and with God, with love, we arrive at spiritual health.

Communication with God: By honest prayer through Jesus just like a little child talks to his father.

Communication between people: by practicing the love of Jesus

Example) evangelist mother and her son

Even for people who are close, ¡®I am sorry¡¯ should be said more often than ¡®I love you¡¯ for successful communication.

There is a Chinese saying, ¡°communication means no pain, no communication means pain.¡±

  2. Enjoy a restful life.

To have spiritual rest,

(1)Stop being judgmental: If you despise or judge people you criticize God who created man. How wonderful God¡¯s creation is!

Example) The total length of a person¡¯s veins (including capillaries) is long enough to go around the earth twice, yet it takes only 1 or 2 minutes to circulate blood to the whole body.

(2)Be free from the law: Jews were bound by over 600 laws without even practicing them. No hotel restaurant openings, no elevators working, no taxis on the Sabbath day in accordance to the law. They are still praying and waiting for the messiah to come in front of the wall of wail. (Some Korean pastors or believers insist that they should rest on Sunday, yet they drive their cars and go to the gas station when the petrol runs out)

Exodus means separation from the life of slaves and live as a free man.(John 8:32) God  forgives us not on the ground of our past, but for our present. God does not remember the sinful actions of our past and expects us not to be bound to sinful living. God saves us on the grounds of our present action based on the faith on Jesus.

Example) saving the robber on the cross

(3) Enjoy the blessings

We often identify blessing as material blessings. However, we should realize that the biggest blessing is the fact that God who is the King of kings and source of all blessings has called us. That means God is calling us to be His children to be princes and princesses. Therefore, we should live a confident life as a prince or princess.

(4) Give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:18) This is God¡¯s command.

Example)an inspiring  prayer  in front of the breakfast meal

When you are able to give thanks for the small matters here and now, you can also give thanks for the bigger matters which are to come. Happiness and blessings are for the people who are thankful. No complaining nor blaming can bring about spiritual health.

(5) Cast away your worries(Philippians 4:6)

Do not worry about anything. Only give thanks to the living God. 96% of all worries are not necessary. Only 4% of them deserve attention. Manager of the big company or rich people suffer from physical mental diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, insomnia and depression due to a lot of anxieties. Non believers have neither faith on the life after death nor hope for the eternal life. They lose spiritual health and often commit suicide. For believers¡¯ relief, we can cast all our worries to God. That is a great blessing and happiness.

(6) serve others.

Believers should find out what they can do instead of thinking about their lack of wealth (serve people physically )

Example) Rockefeller : He got diagnosed of 2 types of cancer in his 40s. He prayed God, ¡°If God saves my life, I will use this wealth for the glory of God.¡± God had cured his diseases and he had lived until 98, building over 4,000 churches including the beautiful  ¡®river side church¡¯ and 24 universities and his foundation is helping poor people even today.

A story of an ungrateful rich man of Yeon Hee Dongà He never used his money for good cause and died.

Luke6:38

Give, and you will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

(7)Rejoice always (1 Thessalonians 5:16)

A pastor¡¯s sermon: believers of Jesus should follow 3 rules : be happy, be busy, be pretty(in appearance and heart). When we laugh out loud, endorphin level increases in blood and sedate mind and relieve anxiety. it increases also T-cells, B-cell, lymphs, white cells and improve immune system and help prevent cancer. It has pain reducing factor 16 times bigger than morphine. Thus, laugh therapy is recommended to the final stage cancer patients. It also increases dopamine in the blood and improves memory ability and helps dementia treatment.

It helps blood circulation, depression treatment, digestion and delays aging process.

In spiritual aspect, living with Jesus helps living joyfully, without anxiety and worries. On the contrary, when the anxieties and worries are accumulated in us, hormones such as Noradrenalin increase in blood which causes high blood pressure and damages pancreas and reduce insulin produce and resulted in diabetes, depressions, insomnia, dementia due to damaged brain cell and stomach and liver problem.

(8) Ride on the train to Heaven: life is a pilgrimage or we are travelers on earth(John 3:16)

   3 types of travelers

1. traveler who does not realize that he is a  traveler

2.traveler who recognize himself as one, yet take pleasures only from the present moment and do not know the destination.

3.traveler who knows the destination and to return

we call people like 1 and 2 a wanderer and 3 a pilgrimage.

All travelers are riding on the train of life. Wanderers get on the big train  destined to destroy as they wish, pursue their own desires and hate each other sometimes.

Pilgrimages ride on the train which is full of peace, love and hope of same pilgrimages who received Jesus and are spiritually healthy. We must get on this heaven bound train spreading Good news to our neighbors and serve them with love to invite them for a ride.

I mentioned only 8 things amongst many factors of spiritual health.

In conclusion, we must communicate, live in peace in the Lord, enjoy the blessings, give thanks always, cast away your worries and be free, serve others, rejoice always, ride the train to Heaven on earth.
