예수님과의 동행

미국에서 5년간 식구들과 살다가 갑자기 나 혼자 한국에 오게 된지 6개월이 넘었다. 내가 5년간 쉬었다 돌아온 학교는 굉장한 힘을 가진 사단의 영향력이 그대로 드러나는 현장이었다. 우리나라의 많은 청소년들의 마음이 허탄하고 악한데 쉽게 노출되어 있었고 악한 것을 악하다고 느끼지 못하는 무서운 불감증에 걸려있었다. 학생 한명 한명씩은 다 순진하고 착하지만 두 세 명 이상의 모임을 만들어 어울려 다닐 때 그들은 이 세상에 무서운 것이 없이 악한 일을 함께하는 강한 사람들이 되었다. 예전의 나는 학생들을 일방적인 방법으로 강하게 인솔해가는 교사였으나 몇몇 가지의 사건을 통해 주님은 나의 마음을 만지시고 학생들 앞에 다가설 때 부드럽게 그들의 마음을 감싸주는 교사로 부르셨다는 생각을 하였다. 하지만 미국에 두고 온 가족이 너무나 그립고 보고 싶은 상황에서 학교라는 사회를 떠나고 싶었다. “ 주님. 제가 이곳에 계속 있어야 합니까?” 라는 질문을 수도 없이 하였다. 이런 내 모습에 주님은 계속해서 인격적으로 대답해주셨고 위로해 주셨고 삶의 길을 인도해 주셨다. 이 간증은 우리를 신부로 삼으신 주님께서 우리와 매일매일 동행하고 싶어 하셔서 나와 함께 걸으신 이야기이다.

약 6년 전 우리 가족은 남편이 로스 알라모스 연구소에서 방문 연구원으로 일을 하게 되어 미국을 방문하게 되었다. 거기서 남편은 신재생 에너지에 대한 연구를 하였고, 나는 좋아하는 그림을 다시 그릴 수 있었다. 아이들도 그 곳 생활에 잘 적응하였다. 그 곳에서 1년 6개월 정도 지난 후 그 곳에서 연구를 계속하기를 바라는 남편은 그 곳에서 계속 연구하기 위해서는 재직하던 대학을 사직해야 했고 우리는 하나님만을 의지하기로 하여 대학을 사직하고 그곳에 남게 되었다. 그 곳에서 5년 동안 하나님의 은혜로 생활하던 우리는 또 다른 결단을 해야 했다. 내가 교사직을 계속 유지하기 위해서는 한국으로 돌아와야만 했다. 갑자기 한국으로 오게 된 나는 오기 전 하나님께 확증을 구하는 7가지 기도제목을 두고 기도를 드렸고 주님은 완벽하게 응답하셨다. 특히 난 학교에서 다시 근무하게 되면 거친 학생들에 대한 두려움이 크게 느껴졌지만 주님은 그 두려움을 100% 없애주셨다.

하나님의 응답으로 한국으로 돌아오기는 했지만 중학교에서 내가 담당한 수업시수는 감당할 수 없을 만큼 많았고 담임으로 맡은 반 학생들은 말썽꾸러기가 많고 불순종하는 학생들이 유난히 많았다. 지독히 많은 일들을 처리하기 위해 7시가 되기 전에 출근을 하여 하루 업무를 마치면 캄캄한 학교에서 혼자 퇴근하는 날들이 계속되었다. 수업을 시작한지 1주일 만에 목소리가 나오지 않는 상황이 시작되었고 그토록 좋아하던 노래를 부를 수도 없었고 또 이야기를 잘 나눌 수도 없는 음성이 되어버렸다.

주님께 나아가지 않고는 한 시간도 수업할 수 없고 거친 학생들을 지도할 수 없으며 육체적으로도 감당이 되지 않았다. 그래서 아예 새벽에 일어나 주님을 찾는 것에 우선순위를 두게 되었다. 늘 새벽 5시 정도에 깨서 주님을 찾도록 하셨고 문제에 대한 기도를 하고 말씀을 읽으면 매일 매일 주님은 말씀으로 주님의 생각과 방법을 주실 때가 많았다. 특별히 홀리네이션스 기도회에 참석하려고 하면 사단의 방해가 세서 금요일은 학교에서 나를 절망케 하는 일이 매주 일어났으나 한 두달 지나니까 없어지기 시작했다. 홀리네이션스의 가족들과 교제, 배움을 통해 내 안에 믿음이 강하게 자라기 시작하였고 주님과의 만남을 더욱 깊게 하였다. 주님은 나로 하여금 전 영역을 묻게 하셔서 수업에 들어가기 전 기도하면서 학생들을 지도할 방법을 물었고 심지어 미술시간에 어떤 작품을 할 것인지도 묻게 하셨다. 이렇게 하나님의 인도로 생활을 하면서 열매들이 맺히기 시작했다. 몇 가지를 예로 들면 다음과 같다.

열매1. 유난히 거칠어서 모든 사람에게 무서운 인상을 주는 학생들이 있다. 모든 수업시간에 참여하지 않는 그 학생들에게 등을 쓰다듬으며 친절하게 지도를 하면서 속으로 계속 기도를 하면 신기할 만큼 열심 있는 학생으로 변했다.

열매2. 수업시간 시작하자마자 감동적인 책을 읽어주면서 학생들의 마음을 부드럽게 만들었다. 처음에는 과연 학생들이 좋아할까 했지만 모든 학생들의 사랑을 받은 시간이었다.

열매3. 보통 담임선생님에 대한 학부모의 평가는 인색하다. 하지만 그들과 많은 대화와 상담시간을 가지면서 거의 모든 학부모들이 전폭적으로 지지해주고 사랑해주는 교사가 되었다.

열매4. 학생들 한 명 한 명 개개인지도를 하면서 친절하게 대해주니 미술 시간이 학생들이 좋아하는 시간이 되었다. 기도하면서 교실에 들어가면 전혀 다른 모습으로 변하는 경험은 이루 셀 수 없을 정도로 많다.

열매5. 일주일에 수업할 시간수가 너무 많아 주님께 기도했는데 나의 계획으로는 도저히 할 수 없는 시간표의 변동을 일으켜 금년 2학기에 시간수가 조금 줄고 내년에는 주님께 기도드린 시수를 맡게 되었다.

열매6. 학급에서 핸드폰을 2개나 훔친 학생이 있었다. 물증이 없었고 경찰조차도 의심이 되는 학생이 있더라도 붙잡을 증거가 약해 불가능하다고 했으나 주님께 기도드리니 그 학생이 순순히 자백하였고 잃어버린 핸드폰도 다 변상해주는 기적이 일어났다.

하지만 이렇게 열매가 있다고 하여도 한시도 주님을 의지하지 않으면 거친 학생들과의 만남에서 일방적으로 밀릴 때가 많다. 그리고 아직도 승리하지 못하는 영역이 많이 남아 있다. 그러나 오직 주님의 능력만으로 나아가야하고 주님과의 데이트를 통해 주님의 말씀과 계획만을 붙잡을 때 좋은 열매를 볼 수 있다는 것을 알았다. 물을 포도주로 바꾸는 주님의 기적을 물 떠온 하인들만 안 것처럼 주님을 바라보는 자만이 주님이 행하시는 기적을 볼 수 있다는 것을 알게 해 주셨다. 잠언 8장 34절의 말씀처럼 주님께 들으며 날마다 주님의 문 곁에서 기다리고 문설주 옆에서 기다리는 자는 복이 있다. 오직 주님의 의도를 듣고 기다리고 기다리는 자. 날마다 그것을 행하는 자에게 주님은 복이 있다고 하신다. 하나님의 응답으로 한국에 돌아올 때는 하나님이 응답하셨으니 평탄한 길이 열린 것이라고 생각했었지만 너무 힘든 일이 많아서 낙심도 했었다. 하지만, 어려운 환경을 통해서 더욱 하나님께 가까이 가게 하시고 하나님을 깊이 알게 하시며 주님과 매일 동행을 하지 않으면 살 수 없게 하시는 주님의 은혜에 깊은 감사를 드린다.

예수님과의 동행(Walk with Jesus)

It has passed over 6 months to serve as a middle school teacher since I alone came back to Korea from United States (US) where I had lived 5 years with my family. The middle school, to which I came back after 5 years’ staying in the US, looks like a place where satan influence its strong power over students. Hearts of many teenagers of our country look like to be empty and exposed to bad influences and they become as numb as they don’t think the bad things as bad. Each student may be good and pure, but when several students gather together, weirdly they become strong and dare to do bad things. I used to be a kind of teacher who push students strongly, but through several happenings and signs I thought that Lord want me to be a teacher who touch the heats of student and comfort them. Besides the big burden of dealing with the students, a strong desire to see the beloved family living in the US makes me eagerly want to leave the Korea and go to US where my family live. So I countlessly asked the Lord, “Lord, should I be here?” Through these difficulties, Lord has answered my prayers and comforted me and lead my way. This is a short story how Lord walks with me in every step of my living in Korea to lead me to a way of pure bride of Him.

About six years ago, our family visited the United States (US) because my husband became to work in Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as a visiting scientist. There my husband did his research of substitute energy and he enjoyed his research a lot. I also started drawings, which I really like. My children also accustomed well to their new environments. After staying there one and half year, my husband had to resign the university he had worked for if he want to do research more in the LAN. After much praying, we decided to resign the university and stay there resolving to depend entirely on the Lord for our family’s future. Living 5 years under abundant grace of God, we had to decide another decision. I had to come back to Korea to keep my status of teacher. Before coming back to Korea, I asked 7 signs seeking the Lord’s will about coming back to Korea, and Lord perfectly answered all these signs I asked. In particular, the overwhelming fear that I had about dealing with tough students Lord 100% get rid of.

Though coming back to Korea assuring that it is the Lord’s will, I had to teach too many classes beyond my ability, and in the class I took charge of are there more trouble-making and disobedient students compared with the other classes. To do too many tasks, I had to get to the school before 7 o’clock, work until it is dark. It took just one week until I lose my voice and can’t sing a song though I love to sing a song very much, and even can’t talk.

Not depending on the Lord wholeheartedly, I can’t even teach one class, I can’t take care of the trouble-making students, and I can’t sustain the least of my physical strength. I should make it the first priority getting up at dawn and seek the Lord. I usually get up around 5 O’Clock and tell the Lord the things I am facing with that day and read the Bible, then gracefully Lord let me know His thoughts and ways. Every Friday, the previous day of Holy Nations prayer meeting, satan disturbs me by evoking irritating happenings. But, it does not last 2 months until satan can’t no longer interfere me: no annoying things happened anymore. Through the teaching and fellowship with the Holy Nations’ family member, my faith grows strongly and fellowship with the Lord also deepens. Lord request me to ask every details of my school life, so I asked how to teach students before attending the class, and Lord even required me to ask the subject of art class. Following the instructions of Lord, I can get some fruits. Some examples are as follows:

fruit 1: There was a student having terrifying impression to everybody and not attending any class. I patted that student on the back kindly praying inwardly, marvelously he has changed into an enthusiastic student.

fruit 2. As soon as the class starts, I soften the mind of the students by reading some touching books. At first, I doubted whether students like it or not. But it becomes the most favorite time every student love to hear.

fruit 3. Usually evaluation of parents about the teacher in charge of their children’ class is not favorable. However, through many talks with the parents of my class, I become the teacher supported and loved by almost all the parents of my class

fruit 4. I have taught each student one-to-one with kindness, then the art class becomes the most favorite class of the most student. I have experience countlessly that students change totally differently when I enter the class prepared with praying.

fruit 5. I prayed about the burden of too many classes I have to teach, which makes me exhausted. Miraculously Lord changed the time table of Gyunggi-do education, so I can teach less classed than now in the 2nd semester. And I can teach the exact classes number I asked for to Lord from the next year.

fruit 6. A student stole two cellular phones in th class. Though there is a student suspected, police officers said that they can’t arrest the student because there is no strong evidence to catch the suspect. I payed to the Lord about this thing, unbelievably the student spontaneously had confessed his theft to the police officers and compensated the phones he had stolen.

Though I have got such fruits, there is still a moment I become a loser in the battle with tough students when I don’t depend on the Lord. And there are still some areas over which I can get a victory. However, I have learned that I can get victories depending solely on the Lord’s supplies, and holding on the Words and plans of the Lord. As only the servants knew the miracle of the Lord changing the water into wine, as the ones looking upon the Lord can see the miracles Lord performed. As described in Proverbs 8:34, the blessed is the one who listens to the Lord, watching daily at Lord’s doors, waiting at Lord’s doorway. When I came back to Korea, I thought that my way in Korea would be broad and easy because Lord answered my prayer and assured that He wanted me be back to Korea. However, many difficulties that I have experienced unexpectedly had made me discouraged. But, through the hardships, Lord has lead me closer to Him, and has revealed Himself more deeply to me. I praise the grace of the Lord teaching me that I can’t live a single day without walking with the Lord.
