<1905부터 1925까지>
1905년 10월 7일 <10월7일-전주> 10월3일 서울을 출발하여 우리는 10월 5일 점심 무렵 이곳에 도착하였다.
일년 이상 이곳을 떠나있었기 때문에 고향 같은 전주(全州)에 다시 돌아와 여러 친구들을 만나고 또 다시 일에 착수하게 된 것이 큰 기쁨이 아닐 수 없었다.
이곳으로 내려오는 도중 감기가 들었고 또 집안을 정돈하는 일이 이것저것 많았기 때문에 처음에는 대단히 힘겨웠다.
새로운 집에 들어간다는 것은 안정되기 까지 조금 힘이 든다.
많은 친구들이 나를 만나기 위해 집에 찾아왔다. 나는 아직 한국말에 서툴지만 곧 잘 되리라고 본다.
이곳에 와서 ‘포시스’ 박사를 만나게 되어 감사한 일이고, 일에도 흥미를 느끼게 되었다. 내가 그에게 많은 도움이 되었으면 한다.
전에 살던 집에는 아직 가보지 못했다.
내가 이곳에서 새로운 봉사(奉仕) 임기(任期)를 시작하면서 나는 모든 면에서 내 임무에 충실하기를 기도한다.
사랑하는 남편 (주-테이트 선교사)이 나를 돕고 있고, 내 생활을 보다 즐겁게 하고 있어 나는 전보다도 더 많은 일을 해야 하겠다.
나는 우리의 가정생활이 행복할 것이며 함께 일하는 가운데 하나님께서 그를 섬기는데 우리가 풍성히 봉사하도록 은혜주실 것을 믿는다.
<Oct 7-Chunju> Leaving Seoul on the morning of the 3rd inst., we reached here about noon on the 5th, so after more than a years absence, it is a great pleasure to be back at 'home' in Chunju and see the friends here and get to work.
As I took a cold on the way and there is so much to do to get the house in order, I feel hampered at first.
Then coming to a new home makes it a little harder to get settled. Many of the friends have been in to see me. I feel quite awkward with the language but hope it will soon come easier to me.
I am so thankful to find Dr. Forsythe here and so interested in the work. I hope I can be of much assistance to him. Have not been over to my old place yet.
As I begin another term of service here, I pray that I may be faithful to my duty in every respect.
With a dear, loving husband to help me and make life more pleasant for me, I ought to do more than formerly.
I know we will be happy in our home and work together and trust that God will bless us richly in all our efforts to serve Him.
1905년 11월 17일 <11월 17일> 10월 17일에 집을 떠나 나는 남편 ‘테이트’ 목사와 함께 거의 4주간 동안 일정을 수행해 나가기를 시작하였다.
우리는 ‘테이트’ 목사의 여섯 군데 집회를 방문하게 돼 있었고 그와 그의 조사들이 남자들을 가르치고 문답하고 하는 동안 나는 여자들을 가르치게 되어 있었다.
우리는 맨 먼저 ‘매개’ 마을로 갔고 그 곳에서 ‘천은’ 마을, 그리고 또 ‘돗날’ 마을과 ‘개네지’ 마을로 갔다.
나는 이 네 번째 ‘개네지’ 마을에서 ‘포시스’ 박사가 아프다는 소식을 듣고 집으로 돌아와야 했다.
나는 이 네 번째 집회 때 떠났기 때문에 우리가 애당초 계획했던 나머지 두 마을 집회는 참석하지 못하고, 따라서 나는 예전보다 열흘이나 먼저 귀가하게 된 셈이다.
11월 2일에 돌아와 보니 정작 ‘포시스’ 박사는 많이 좋아졌고 거기에 ‘다니엘’ 박사가 간호하고 있었다.
나는 이 여행이 매우 즐거웠다. 내가 가르치는 여인들은 모두 열성적으로 배워서 대단히 기뻤다.
나는 오후에는 주로 환자를 보거나 틈나는 대로 가르치기도 하였고, 또 오전 중에는 세례를 받으려는 사람들이나 교회에 참석한 사람들을 할 수 있는 데까지 열심히 가르쳤다.
‘테이트‘ 목사는 나보다 일주일 후에 돌아왔으나 오늘 아침 세례문답을 해야 한다면서 다녀왔던 곳으로 다시 떠났다. 이번 여행에서 약 200명이 세례문답을 받았는데 그 중 150명이 세례를 받았다.
나는 돌아와서 병원에서 여성 환자들을 열심히 돌보아 왔으며 또 틈이 나는 대로 최근 시작한 여학교 (주-전주 기전(紀全)여학교)에서 가르치는 일에 시간을 할애하였다.
<Nov 17> Leaving home on the 17th (Oct), Mr. Tate and I started out on an itinerary expecting to be gone nearly four weeks.
We were to visit six of his meeting places and while he and his helpers taught and examined the men, I was to teach the women.
We went first to Maikai and from there to Chun-un and then to Totnal and Kenegie. At the last place I was sent for to come back home on account of Dr. Forsythe's sickness and so I had to leave the work there and did not get to the two other places we had planned and I came home ten days earlier than I had expected.
Reaching here on Nov. 2nd, I found Dr. Forsythe better and Dr. Daniel here. I was much pleased with my trip and it was a real pleasure to teach the women, some of whom were very anxious to learn.
In the afternoons I saw patients and taught as I could, and the mornings were given up to teaching the catechumens and the church attendants as much as possible.
Mr. Tate came in a week later and has just left this morning for another trip to some of the same places to examine for baptism. On our trip there were over 200 examined for the catechumate of whom 150 were received.
Since my return I have been trying to attend to the women patients at the dispensary and give a little time to the girl's school which we have begun again lately.
1925년 4월 11일 <4월 11일-전주> 이 일기를 쓰기 시작한지도 벌써 15년이 되었다.
이 세월동안 우리 자신들뿐 아니라 이곳에 있는 많은 형편과 사람관계와 또 우리들의 일에 있어서도 많은 변화가 있었다.
우리 부부는 둘 다 건강에 아주 심각한 지장이 있었다.
나는 8년여 동안 설사로 고생했다. ‘테이트’ 선교사는 약 6년간 심장질환과 또 만성감기로 인한 질환으로 고생을 했다.
이제는 우리가 해야 할 역할도 다 끝나는 것 같고 우리의 자리와 우리의 역할을 좀 더 젊고 능력 있는 사람들에게 넘겨주는 것이 좋을 것 같이 보인다.
그래서 오는 6월에는 정기 휴가차 귀국하도록 준비해야겠다. 그렇다고 아주 돌아가는 것은 아니고.
우리가 오랜 세월 함께 일해 왔던 이곳 사람들을 떠날 수는 없다. 그들은 우리가 애써 이루고자 한 일을 매우 고맙게 생각하고 있는 처지다.
어제 오후 팥정리(荳亭里)교회 (주-금산교회)에서는 우리의 송별예배가 있었다. 이 팥정리 교회는 ‘테이트’ 목사의 활동의 한 중심이었다.
이 송별예배에는 그 동안 잘 알고 지냈던 여섯 명의 조선인 목사가 참례했다. 이 예배는 이자익(李自益) 목사가 인도했다. 아주 훌륭한 송별 예배였다. 우리는 그들이 말과 선물로 보여주는 이 기독교인의 사랑과 선의를 매우 감사하게 생각한다. 이런 일들이 바로 우리를 그들에게 더 가까이 하며 우리로 하여금 그들을 떠나기 어렵게 만든다.
<Apr 11-Chunju> Fifteen years since an entry in this diary. During this time many changes, both in ourselves and in the conditions here, the people and the work.
We have both had a serious impairment of health - I for eight or more years from sprue, and Mr. Tate for about six years from heart and other troubles following flu.
It seems that our work here is about done and that it would be best to give our place and support here to younger and stronger workers, so we are getting ready to go on our regular furlough in June and are not planning to return.
It is hard to leave the people with whom and for whom we have worked for so long, and they are very appreciative of what we have tried to do for them.
Yesterday P.M. a farewell meeting was held in the Pat Chang church, which is near the center of Mr. Tate's field. There were six native pastors with whom he has been much associated, present and the meeting was conducted by Mr. Yi Chai Ik and it was nice in every way.
We appreciate the love and good will of the Christians and their expressions both by word and gifts and it draws us closer to them and makes it harder for us to leave.
1925년 6월 19일 <6월 19일-일본 고베(神戶)> 지난 수주일 동안은 떠날 준비 때문에 정신없이 보냈다. 짐도 꾸리고 세간을 팔아 넘기고 모든 일을 준비하는데 정말 바빴다.
그러나 제일 힘들었던 것은 그 동안 조선 사람들과 함께 해오던 일을 정리하고 그들에게 작별인사를 고하는 일이었다.
그들은 우리들에게 참으로 잘해주었다.
또 여러 가지 방법으로 우리가 그들 때문에 한 일에 대해 감사를 표시해 주었다.
5월26일에는 ‘유성리’ 교회에서 송별예배가 있었다. 이 교회는 ‘레이놀즈’ 박사가 담당한 구역이었는데 ‘테이트’ 목사가 간간이 돌보아준 교회였다.
송별예배는 훌륭한 프로그램으로 이루어졌다. 어린이들이 노래도 부르고 또 제사 때 쓰는 향로와 촛대도 선물로 주었다.
수일 후에 같은 송별예배가 전주 서문박 교회에서도 있었다.
이 교회는 ‘테이트’ 목사가 30년 전에 세운 교회이고 나도 거기서 오랫동안 열심히 일했다.
여러 명이 감사연설을 했다. 그리고 교회에서는 훌륭한 조선말 성경을 ‘테이트’ 목사에게 주었고 여신도회에서는 나에게 동으로 만든 화병을 주었다.
그것 뿐 아니라 전주에 있는 믿지 않는 시민들도 테이트 목사가 일생을 바쳐 조선 사람들을 위해서 해준 일에 무엇인가 감사를 표시하고 싶다고 하였다. 그리하여 이곳 도지사까지 합쳐 30명 넘는 사람들이 우리들을 위해서 저녁을 베풀어주었다.
전라북도 도지사는 일본사람이었지만 도지사 부부는 기독교 신자였다.
또 6월8일에는 그들이 다른 자리를 마련해서 미국으로 돌아가는 선교사-우리 부부와 ‘크레인’양 등등 모두를 위해서 연못가에서 티파티도 열어주었다. ‘테이트’ 목사가 이곳 관리들과 항상 좋은 관계로 지낼 수 있었던 것은 감사한 일이다.
미션 계통의 재산을 관리하는데 있어서 ‘테이트’ 목사는 그들의 많은 협력을 얻었다.
6월17일 우리는 마침내 우리를 전송하기 위해 모여들었던 많은 동료들에게 작별을 고했다.
부디 그들이 언젠가는 많이 미국에도 오게 되어 서로 만났으면 좋겠다. 그 중 몇 명인가는 18마일이나 떨어진 기차 본선이 있는 이리 (裡里)까지 따라와 주었고 특히 박 목사와 이자익 목사와 정씨는 우리가 일본행 배를 타는 부산까지 따라와 주었다.
박 목사와 이 목사는 ‘테이트’ 선교사와 여러 해 같이 일했던 조선인 목사들이고, 특히 이 목사는 최근 수년 동안 ‘테이트’ 선교사를 많이 도왔던 사랑하는 믿음의 아들이다. 정씨는 교회 원로였고 장로교 총대도 했던 사람이다.
이렇게 훌륭한 조선사람 동료들을 작별한다는 것은 참으로 쓰라린 일이다. 그들은 영원히 우리의 마음속에, 우리의 기도 속에, 그리고 여러 해 동안 우리가 간직하는 가장 소중한 재산의 하나로 기억되게 될 것이다.
어젯밤 이곳 고베 (神戶)에 도착해서도 이리(주-지금의 익산(益山) 시)교회의 김 목사가 우리를 마중 나와 우리 호텔까지 데려다 주어서 참으로 반갑고 놀라왔다.
김 목사는 이곳 신학대학에서 특별한 공부를 하고 있는 중이다. 부디 하나님의 풍성하심이 이들 모든 조선 사람들에게 강림하시고 또 주께서 세우신 이 교회의 머리 위에 항상 게시옵기를 기도합니다.
<Jun 19-Kobe, Japan> The last few weeks have certainly been strenuous ones with the packing, selling off our household things and getting ourselves and things ready to leave.
The hardest thing has been the winding up of the work among the Koreans and telling them goodbye. They certainly have been good to us and have shown their appreciation of our work for them in many ways.
On May 26, a farewell meeting was held Yusungni church for that section which formerly was Dr. Reynolds field, but which Mr. Tate has had the care of for some time. They had a nice program and the children sang and then an ancestral worshipping incense burner and candles was presented to Mr. Tate.
A few days later a similar meeting was held at the West Gate city church which Mr. Tate started 3o years ago and in which I have worked, more or less, all the time.
Many appreciative words were spoken and Mr. Tate was presented with a nice Korean New Testament from the church and the Auxiliary gave me a bronze vase.
Late on, some of the non-Christian men of the city, said they would like to do something to show their appreciation of Mr. Tate's life and work among them and for the Korean people, so they and the Governor of the province together gave a dinner in his honor at which 30 or more were present.
The Governor is a Japanese and he and his wife are both Christians. On another occasion - June 8 - they gave a tea out at the lotus pond for all the missionaries who are going to the U.S. this spring - the Winns, Miss Crane and ourselves.
It is gratifying that Mr. Tate's relations with the officials have been so pleasant nearly all the time and he has had considerable work to do with them in attending to the mission property.
On the 17th we had to say goodbye to our fellow-workers-many of whom we hope to see in the U.S. sometime, and to many of our dear Korean friends who gathered to see us off.
Several went as far as Riri, to the main line 18 miles away, and three, Mr. pak and Mr. Yi Chai Ik and Mr. Chung, went with us as far as Fusan where we took the boat for Japan.
Mr. Pak and Mr. Yi are two native Pastors who have worked with Mr. Tate for many years and Mr. Yi has of late years been his greatest help and most beloved son in the faith, Mr. Chung is an elder and was sent as a representative of Presbytery.
It has been hard to leave such good friends as the Koreans, among whom we have worked, and they will be constantly in our minds and in our prayers and the memory of our years among them will ever be among our most treasured possessions.
A pleasant surprise awaited us here last night when Mr. Kim, pastor of the Riri church, met us at the station and took us up to our hotel. He is here taking some special study in the Theological Seminary. May god's riches blessing rest upon the Korean people and upon His church which He has established among them. //
